Understanding pain through the relationship

Chronic pain can deeply affect us - not only physically, but emotionally, mentally and relationally. Pain is a complex experience influenced by many factors, including the nervous system, stress, emotions, past experiences, and our relationship with our body. A mind-body approach recognizes that pain is real while also exploring how the nervous system adapts and responds to perceived threat. At Kristen McCarthy Counselling, you'll find a compassionate space to better understand your body's pain signals, reduce fear and protective patterns, and discover a renewed sense of safety, trust, and connection with your body.

Pain may be connected with:

  • Nervous system sensitivities

Long term effects of chronic pain

Living with chronic pain can begin to influence how you move through the world, affecting your confidence, relationships, work, and the activities that once brought you joy. You may begin to fear your symptoms, lose trust in your body, or feel as though your body has become something to manage rather than a place that feels like home. The emotional and mental weight of persistent pain can be just as significant as the physical experience, often leading to frustration, isolation, and a deep sense of grief and loss.

  • Building a felt sense of safety, nervous system regulation, and trust within the body.

  • Exploring the relationship between the brain, nervous system, emotions, stress, and lived experience.

  • Understanding how the nervous system develops protective patterns and how these can contribute to persistent pain.

  • Gently processing unresolved experiences held within the body through body-centred therapeutic approaches.

  • Supporting the brain and nervous system in developing new patterns of safety, resilience, and flexibility.

  • Reconnecting with movement, meaningful activities, and the parts of life that pain may have limited.

My work integrates somatic therapy, nervous-system informed approaches, Deep Brain Reorienting, and Pain Reprocessing Therapy within a compassionate mind-body approach.

Reconnecting with the safety of the body

Healing chronic pain often involves moving from fear and protection toward compassion and connection. Through somatic awareness and a gentle exploration of sensation, emotion, and nervous system responses, we begin to shift from fighting our symptoms to understanding what the body may be communicating. As the body feels supported, it becomes possible to restore trust and move toward greater resilience and engagement with life.
