Grief & Life Transitions
Do you find yourself navigating the pain of loss or the uncertainty of change? Grief counselling can support you through experiences of loss and transition, whether you are grieving the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a change in health, work, or identity. These significant life transitions can leave us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what comes next.
Understanding Grief as a Natural Process
Grief is a natural response to losing someone or something that has mattered deeply to us. It can arise through the death of a loved one or major life transitions, like the end of a relationship, illness, becoming a parent, or career changes. These threshold moments can touch every part of our lives, bringing feelings of sadness, uncertainty, fear, or confusion. There is no right way to grieve, and no timeline for healing, your experience is entirely unique to you. Grief counselling with Kristen McCarthy Counselling offers a compassionate space to honour what has been lost while gently supporting your capacity to carry it in a way that allows life to continue unfolding.
How Grief May Be Experienced:
-
A deep sense of sadness, longing, or emptiness
-
Waves of emotion that arise unexpectedly
-
Fatigue, heaviness, or a loss of energy and motivation
-
Difficulty concentrating or feeling present in everyday life
-
Feeling untethered, uncertain, or as though the ground beneath you has shifted
-
Feeling emotionally numb, shocked, or disconnected from yourself and others
-
Questioning your identity, purpose, or direction in life
-
Missing the life you once knew while trying to navigate what comes next
-
Feeling alone in an experience that is difficult to put into words
-
A quiet longing to reconnect with meaning, hope, and a sense of home within yourself

Holding Space for Loss and Change
Grief asks something very different of us than many other life experiences. Rather than pushing through or searching for quick answers, it invites us to slow down and acknowledge what is present. While loss cannot be taken away, it can be held with greater compassion, understanding, and support. Together, we create a safe space to honour your unique experience of loss and change. As we gently tend to what has been lost, we also begin to weave in the possibility of healing, meaning, and moving forward while carrying what matters most

A Mind=Body Approach to Grief and Life Transitions
My approach integrates trauma-informed clinical counselling with somatic therapy to explore how grief and life transitions are experienced emotionally, physically, and within our sense of self, while creating space for meaning, and integration.
Together, our work may include:
-
Developing awareness of how grief is experienced in the body, emotions, and inner world
-
Making space for complex emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, fear, relief, or uncertainty
-
Exploring the impact of loss and transition on identity, relationships, and sense of belonging
-
Gently supporting the nervous system through periods of change, uncertainty, and emotional intensity
-
Honouring what has been lost while making space for what is emerging
-
Reconnecting with values, inner resources, and sources of support, self-expression, and creativity
-
Moving through life transitions with greater self-trust, resilience, and compassion
Honouring the Wisdom of Grief
Grief is a sacred encounter with what we have loved, valued, and held dear. Beneath the pain of loss are memories, meanings, and a profound capacity to feel that continues to shape who we are becoming. Through compassionate exploration, we learn to honour what has been lost while integrating its wisdom into the ongoing story of our lives. In this process, grief opens us up to a deeper capacity for love, becoming not something to move beyond, but something we learn to carry with greater meaning and connection to life.
