What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice that invites the body into deep rest while maintaining a gentle thread of awareness.
Often translated as "yogic sleep," it differs from ordinary sleep by keeping you consciously aware as the body relaxes. Your attention is gradually guided through your body, breath, sensations, emotions, and deeper layers of awareness. There's no particular state to achieve, and you do not have to empty your mind. Instead, Yoga Nidra helps you slow down and create space to notice sensations, emotions, memories, or thoughts passing through awareness. You are invited to meet whatever is present with curiosity and compassion, remaining connected to the support of your body and the ground beneath you.
How Yoga Nidra Can Support You
-
Deep Rest and Relaxation: Creates space to slow down and support your body to move into conscious relaxation.
-
Nervous System Regulation: Helps shift from states of stress and protection toward greater ease and safety.
-
Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Calms mental activity and cultivates present-moment awareness.
-
Body Awareness: Develops sensitivity to body sensations, helping you reconnect to internal signals.
-
Emotional Awareness: Allows you to notice emotions and thoughts without judgement or overwhelm.
-
Self-Compassion: Invites you to meet yourself where you are, allowing your experience to be exactly as it is.
-
Builds Resilience: Invites you to stay present with difficult experiences without needing to immediately change it.

Somatic Approach to Yoga Nidra
My approach to Yoga Nidra is informed by somatic therapy and years of teaching yoga and meditation. In this practice, awareness moves gradually through the inner landscape: body, breath, emotion, thought, and into stillness. Rather than trying to change difficult experiences, you are invited to develop the capacity to be present with what is here while remaining connected to safety. This includes learning to notice more than one experience at the same time. For instance, you might notice tension in one area while sensing the spaciousness of the entire body. You might notice sadness while feeling your breath, or become aware of restless thoughts while remaining connected to a deeper sense of presence. Holding these different experiences together creates space around what we feel. Yoga Nidra is more than a relaxation practice. It's an invitation to turn toward yourself, process the emotional stress in your nervous system, and embody a compassionate relationship with your experience.

About Kristen
As a registered clinical counsellor and yoga teacher with nearly two decades of experience, my work blends somatic therapy, trauma-informed care, and a depth perspective. I'm interested in the relationship between our body, emotions, and the unconscious patterns that shape our nervous system responses. Rather than only talking about our experiences, I believe in reconnecting to our capacity to feel, sense, and know. My years of teaching meditation deeply inform my therapeutic approach. I view the body as an intelligent source of wisdom and awareness. Yoga Nidra bridges these worlds, offering a practice of slowing down to listen inwardly, and reconnect with yourself.
