Healing is a process of understanding our life experiences, not only through the mind, but also through the language of the body, emotions, and inner world. My approach integrates trauma-informed clinical counselling with somatic therapy, mindfulness, and depth-oriented perspectives to support the whole self. Together, we explore the relationship between body, mind, emotions, and the patterns that shape our lives. At the heart of my practice is the belief that healing begins by restoring connection with ourselves. Through compassion and curiosity, we can cultivate greater self-understanding, integration, and reconnect with who we truly are.

My Therapeutic Approach

Somatic therapy: working with the wisdom of the body

Our bodies hold the stories of our lived experiences. Somatic therapy invites us to slow down and listen to the language of the body, the sensations, emotions, impressions, and patterns that emerge when we turn our attention inward. Rather than trying to overcome symptoms of dysregulation, we learn to change our relationship with what is arising and begin to understand the ways we have adapted to our experiences. As we reconnect with the wisdom of the body, we cultivate a deeper sense of safety, support the integration of body, mind, and emotions, and discover the hidden gifts and wisdom within ourselves.

Creating safety and capacity in the nervous system

Healing happens when we feel safe enough to remain present with our experience and connected to ourselves. When we have lived through trauma, stress or overwhelm, our nervous system may become more familiar with protective responses, making it harder to access states of ease and regulation. At Kristen McCarthy Counselling we work with the somatic practices of grounding, orienting, and sensory awareness, to create anchors of safety within ourselves, gently expanding our capacity to meet ourselves with kindness, acceptance and compassion.

Trauma-Informed Therapy: A Phased Approach

Establishing Safety and Stability

Together, we develop resources that support a sense of safety within yourself. This may include cultivating awareness of grounding, breath, body sensations, and nervous system responses, while building self-compassion and the capacity to stay present with emotions one moment at a time.

Processing with Compassion

As safety and resilience develop, we gently explore emotions, sensations, and protective patterns that shape your experience of the present. Through this process, we support nervous system flexibility, and new possibilities for healing and growth.

Reconnection and Integration

At the heart of healing is reconnecting with yourself, your authentic expression, values, and purpose. This creates space for a more integrated sense of self, and the ability to move forward in life with greater meaning and self-understanding.

Mindfulness & Embodiment

Mindfulness invites us to slow down and observe our inner experience with curiosity and openness. Rather than judging or trying to change what arises, we learn to meet our thoughts, emotions, and sensations with an acceptance of what is present. This creates space for self-compassion to naturally arise.

Embodiment allows us to bring this awareness into the body, learning to listen to, trust, and respond to what we sense and feel in the present moment. Over time, these practices deepen self-understanding, strengthen our relationship with ourselves, and support a more grounded and authentic way of being.

Inner World: Images, Symbols & Wisdom Within

Depth psychology invites us to explore the layers of our inner world through images, symbols, dreams, and recurring patterns. Through compassionate exploration of the shadow, the parts of ourselves that have been hidden, protected, or rejected, we can begin to uncover the gifts, strengths and wisdom within these aspects of ourselves. Working with inner imagery, archetypal themes, and the tensions between opposing parts of ourselves opens new pathways for self-discovery, meaning-making, and a deeper relationship with the unfolding story of our lives.

The journey toward wholeness

Our therapeutic work together is a journey of returning to relationship with yourself. It is not about changing the parts of yourself that feel difficult or painful, but meeting them with new insight, compassion, and understanding. As we bring awareness to the body, emotions, experiences, and inner world, we begin to uncover the wisdom within our own story. The gold of this journey is the process of integration, bringing together the many parts of ourselves into a more coherent and harmonious whole, allowing the authentic expression of who we are to emerge.
